Top 10 freediving spots in Amed, Bali.
There are some locations famous among scuba divers, snorkelers, and freedivers, which are definitely our favorites and a must-see for every recreational freediving enthusiast.
1. Liberty Shipwreck
Liberty Ship Wreck is a 120m long boat built around WWII, first damaged by a Japanese torpedo near Nusa Penida. The crew of this cargo ship, transporting industrial goods to the North Bali harbor of Singaraja (Bali's capital at that time), tried to save the vessel and headed north. Realizing it couldn’t reach its destination, they brought it to the beach near Tulamben village, about 15 miles north of Amed. In 1963, an earthquake caused the remains of the boat to slide down the sandy bottom, now sitting at around 27m depth with its top visible at 5m depth. This huge ship, which maintains around 60% of its structure, is home to all types of marine life found around Bali. Schools of pelagic predators, reef hunters, and colorful coral fish feed on algae. Turtles, rays, and eels make this site feel like an aquarium in the wild. Numerous coral species thrive on the ship’s remains, and there are several swim-throughs suitable for beginner and experienced freedivers alike. It's one of the best freediving locations in Indonesia. This dive site is accessible from the shore and is also included in our boat fun freediving trips between Tulamben and Amed.
2. Kubu Ship Wreck
This is the best choice for experienced freedivers capable of diving to at least 20m with a minimum 1:30m dive time. A modern wreck (sunk around 10 years ago), it rests on the sandy floor at 25m, with its top at 18m. Accessible from the shore, it’s most enjoyable as part of a boat fun freediving session combined with Liberty Ship Wreck or other sites between Amed and Tulamben. Also known as the Boga Wreck, it shelters many coral fish within its structure. It offers a slightly challenging swim-through at 20m and stunning views of schooling barracuda and pelagic species. A top spot for lovers of deep diving without tanks.
3. Japanese Ship Wreck
A small vessel, around 15m long, lies on the sandy bottom at about 8m depth, not far from the shore, some 10 miles south of Amed. This is an ideal site for beginner freedivers or those less familiar with ocean diving. Beyond the wreck, there is a healthy coral reef nearby with rare fields of branching and table corals. This destination is best approached by boat as part of our freediving trips in Bali.
4. Lipah Beach
A unique destination known for calm waters, white sand, and a mix of natural and artificial reefs. Lipah is one of the best freediving spots in Bali to meet sea turtles, especially around 6–7m depth in the central bay. It’s also a center for coral conservation projects and the location of our Intro to Marine Conservation session. Here we dive at depths from 5m to 15m, exploring coral nurseries, artificial plantations, and breathtaking natural formations, some centuries old. It’s perfect for snorkeling and freediving combo experiences.
5. Jemeluk Bay
This is one of the best-known freediving and snorkeling destinations in Bali thanks to its easy access and rich marine life. With coral patches from 5m to 20m, an underwater temple, and coral plantations by conservation teams, it’s a visual delight. The wall on the easternmost edge of the bay is especially popular with freedivers. This site can be accessed from the shore or included in boat trips.
6. Freediving Spots between Tulamben and Amed
This stretch hosts lesser-known but excellent freediving locations: Batu Belah, Emerald, Drop Off, Bebayu Beach, and Batu Niti. These quieter spots offer black sand, volcanic rock formations, tiny caves, grottos, and giant stones offshore. The unique terrain creates magical light and attracts marine life, making it great for freediving and underwater photography. These sites work well in combination with Liberty Ship Wreck dives.
7. Freediving Spots on the South Edge of Amed
Remote and rarely visited, these include Golden Rock, Gili Selang, and the coral reefs between them—absolute favorites for fun freediving. Strong currents and difficult access make them suitable only for boat trips. The underwater terrain has massive stones and pinnacles that draw abundant marine life. This is the wild side of Amed, ideal for experienced freedivers and one of the best freediving destinations in Asia. These can be included in our boat fun diving or freediving experience day trips.
Freediving Spots Outside Amed
The Bali Freedivers team loves underwater exploration beyond Amed. We offer full-day freediving holiday packages that include water and land activities.
8. Candidasa + Lahangan Sweet
Candidasa is a seaside village 30 miles from Amed, located in the strait between Bali and Nusa Penida—an ideal current-rich habitat. Boat-accessible spots include Gili Biaha, Gili Tepekong, Virgin Beach, and Bug Bug Bay. This area offers pinnacles, drop-offs, coral gardens, and sightings of tuna, dolphins, and even whales. It’s a must-see on any freediving holiday. After diving, we visit Lahangan Sweet for a spectacular sunset viewpoint.
9. Bon Dalem Village
About 45 minutes north of Amed, Bon Dalem is home to Bali’s largest coral conservation site. Thousands of underwater structures—including Buddhist temple replicas and an underwater “city” of statues—sit at 8–10m depth. This freediving spot pairs well with a short jungle trek to Les waterfall.

Nusa Penida Nusa Penida offers some of the most thrilling freediving in Bali. With crystal-clear waters, dramatic underwater cliffs, and frequent manta ray encounters, it's perfect for advanced freedivers.
