Finding Your Flow: Why Amed is Bali’s Freediving Capital?
While South Bali is for the parties, East Bali is for the water. We chose Amed as the home for Bali Freedivers for one simple reason: immediate depth. In Amed, you don’t need a 40-minute boat ride to find 40 meters. You just walk off the sandy beach and dive.
Why Amed Beats the Rest of Bali
Most people go to Tulamben for a day trip to see the USAT Liberty Wreck, but staying in Amed gives you the actual "freediver lifestyle."
- The Depth-to-Distance Ratio: In places like Pemuteran or Sanur, you’re stuck on boats. In our dive site at "I love Amed" sign, the depth of 30m is just 40m from shore, so we don't need a boat. This means more time training and less time (and money) spent on transport.
- The Community Vibe: Amed is a global hub for breath-hold enthusiasts. You’ll find yourself sharing a post-dive coconut with world-class coaches and record-holders.
- The "Slow" Pace: Freediving is about heart rate and relaxation. Amed’s lack of beach clubs and traffic jams makes it easier to keep your tranquil mood on, so needed for freediving activated.
Life in the Slow Lane: What to Expect
Amed isn’t a polished resort town—it’s a string of fishing villages with soul.
- The Food: Forget overpriced tourist traps. We eat at local Warungs like Galanga or grab healthy bowls at Joli Best View, while watching the sunset over Mount Agung. Check our Dining Guide to Amed, Bali for lots of nice cafes and restaurants to dine in.
- Climate & Conditions: It’s drier and sunnier here than in Ubud. The water stays a steady 28-30°C, and because the bays are protected, we rarely deal with the heavy swells that shut down diving like in the south.
- Getting Around: Rent a scooter (approx. 75k IDR/day) to zip between bays. Note: Gojek and Grab don't operate here, so we rely on local drivers who actually know the backroads.
Making the Trek: How to Get Here
Don't let the "remote" label scare you. The drive is part of the experience, winding through Bali’s most beautiful rice terraces and water palaces.

- Tip: If you’re coming from the south, ask your driver to stop at Tirta Gangga or Lahangan Sweet for the best views in Bali.
The Melasti Edge: Why We’re Not in the Tourist Hubs
While most schools are clustered in the busy center, we chose Melasti for its peace and direct connection to the local community.
- Zero Crowds: Unlike Jemeluk Bay, which can get packed with snorkelers and day-trippers, our base in Melasti offers a serene atmosphere. This is critical for the relaxation and focus required in freediving.
- The "I Love Amed" Dive Spot: Our "front yard" is the iconic I Love Amed sign. For freedivers, this spot is a hidden gem. It’s a sandy slope that drops into deep blue quickly, home to the Marina Srikandi(Pacha) speedboat wreck and perfect conditions without current.
- Authentic Bali: Staying in Melasti means you're steps away from local life, traditional salt farms, and quieter beachfronts that feel like the "old Bali."
