This is my favorite freedive school in Amed. I found in “Bali Freedivers Amed” everything I was looking for: professional free dive lessons, theory and practice, effective water sessions (I fixed important technical details), clear explanations and very frien…

Go deeper than you think you can
Most people arrive at their first freediving course with the same question: can I actually do this? Two days later they have gone deeper than they expected, they feel calm and confident in the water, and they have the video to show for it.
Level 1 is our 2-day beginner course in Amed, Bali. You need no freediving experience. If you are comfortable swimming in a pool, you are ready to start.
A group of 3, coached one by one
We take a maximum of 3 students per course. You train together, but nobody gets the same lesson. Your instructor watches how you breathe, move and equalize, then gives you your own tasks and exercises for your level. If your ears hold you back, you work on your ears. If it is nerves, you work on relaxation. You move forward at your own pace.
Head instructor Yan has been teaching since 2017 and has guided more than 500 students. Our school is rated 5.0 on Google from more than 130 reviews.
The 12 metre guarantee
Dive to 12 metres in your 2 days, or keep training with us free until you do.
How it works. 12 metres is the depth required for Level 1 certification. If you do not reach it during your course, you join our scheduled group line sessions, whenever a place is free, until you do. You have 12 months from when you take the course. All we ask is that you attend every session of your course and complete the three prep videos before day 1.
What you will learn
The course starts with theory you will actually use: how your body adapts to pressure, how equalization works, and how to breathe before a dive. You will also learn how gas exchange works, why relaxation matters so much, and how to stay safe, including hyperventilation, the breathing cycle and rescue protocols.
In the water you put it into practice. You start with static breath-hold, relaxation drills and dry equalization training, then move on to free immersion, constant weight diving, duck dives and finning. In the pool you practise dynamic apnea, which is swimming underwater on a single breath.
By the end of the two days you have a solid base for your own freediving: deeper, longer and calmer, with safety and respect for the ocean first.

What our students say
Had a really great freediving session with Yan today and honestly appreciated how attentive and structured the whole experience was. Before getting into the water, he actually listened to what I wanted to work on, what my goals were, and adjusted the session…
I signed up for a freediving lesson with zero expectations. I’d always believed I simply couldn’t equalize my ears - every attempt to dive even a few meters would end in discomfort, so I assumed it just wasn’t for me. Yan, my instructor, completely changed t…
Massive shoutout to the crew at the freediving school Bali Freedivers Amed🌊. Honestly, one of the best parts was that it didn’t feel like “one person dives while everyone else just hangs around killing time.” Usually with this kind of thing, the holiday gets …
I recently joined a freediving workshop with Yan, and it turned out to be one of the most surprising and eye-opening experiences I’ve had. We started with a theoretical session and breathwork exercises on land. Yan explained how the body functions during a d…
Frequently asked questions
I am not a strong swimmer. Can I join?
Yes. You do not need to be a strong swimmer. It is enough to be comfortable swimming in a pool. Many of our students start with no ocean experience.
Building your comfort in the water is one of the main goals of the course, and your instructor sets tasks for your level.
I am nervous about the ocean or about holding my breath. Is this course for me?
Yes, and you are not alone. Most beginners feel this before day 1.
We start with relaxation and breathing, because calm is what makes freediving work. In the water you only go deeper when you feel ready. With a maximum of 3 students, your instructor is always close.
What if I cannot equalize my ears?
This is the most common worry, and it is usually a technique problem, not a problem with your ears. The course includes a dry equalization session before you dive. Your instructor then watches each dive and gives you your own exercises.
Students who were sure they could not equalize have learned it with us. If you have a cold or blocked sinuses on the day, tell us and we will move you to another course date.
What happens if I do not reach 12 metres?
Then you keep training with us for free. You join our scheduled group line sessions, whenever a place is free, until you reach 12 metres. You have 12 months from when you take the course. To qualify, attend every session of your course and complete the prep videos before day 1.
Not everyone reaches 12 metres in two days, and that is normal. Depth comes from relaxation and technique, and some people need more time in the water.
Is certification included in the price?
No. The course price covers the training. If you want a certificate, the fee for your chosen pathway is paid separately. We certify with Molchanovs, SSI and AIDA, and you can also take the course recreationally with no certificate. You choose your pathway when you book. The Molchanovs pathway for this course is Wave 1.
To be certified you need to meet the performance requirements of the agency you choose.
What if I get sick or my plans change?
Tell us as soon as you can. You can move to any other scheduled group course within 12 months at no cost.
The deposit is refunded in full if we cannot run the course or in a case of force majeure.
Can I start on a day that suits me?
We run two group courses a week. If none of the dates work for you, one person can start on a date of their choice for US $100 extra. If two or more of you book together, you choose your dates at no extra charge.
How do I get to Amed and where do I stay?
Amed is on the east coast of Bali, about 3 hours by car from the airport. We can book a driver for you.
When you book, we send you our Amed arrival guide with places to stay near the school, how to get around and what to bring.
What is freediving and how do I get started in Bali or Amed?
Freediving is diving underwater on a single breath. No tanks, no breathing underwater.
It is a mix of relaxation, breath control and specific diving techniques. If you are thinking of starting in Bali, Amed is the perfect spot for beginners: calm, clear and relaxed. Our 2-day Level 1 Freediving course is beginner-friendly and teaches you all the basics: safety, breathing, equalization and diving skills. No freediving experience needed.
Where in Bali are your freediving courses held?
Our freediving courses take place in Amed, one of Bali's top freediving spots thanks to calm conditions, almost no current, and easy access to depths of 20, 30, 40 and even 50 metres, right from the shore.
Our school is on a quiet street in Amed, Jl. Melasti, surrounded by some of the town's best restaurants and hotels. Here we run theory classes, gear fittings, and breathwork and stretching workshops. You will also find our ice bath here.
For line diving we go just 3 minutes from the school, using moorings at 20 m for beginners and 35 m to 45 m for advanced courses and deep coaching.
Outside of training, we run fun diving trips to world-famous sites like the USAT Liberty Shipwreck, the Japanese Wreck, Jemeluk Bay and Lipah Beach, plus hidden gems like Golden Rock, Bunutan, Drop-off and Coral Garden, and further afield to Gili Tepekong, Biaha (Candidasa) and Bon Dalem (Tejakula). Read more about the dive sites in our Fun Freediving with Bali Freedivers guide.
We also offer spearfishing charters to rumpons in Amed, Tejakula and Singaraja, along with reef spearfishing in permitted areas.
What is included in a freediving course?
Our freediving courses and packages in Amed include all study materials and programs as outlined in each course, full gear rental for training, video of your underwater performance, and daily ice bath sessions during the course, which are great for recovery.
Certification fees are not included and are paid separately according to your chosen pathway.
What are the health benefits of freediving?
Once you learn freediving, you have the freedom to explore underwater: coral gardens in Amed, Tulamben and across Bali. But that is just the beginning. Freediving also improves your health, both physical and mental.
On the physical side, it strengthens your lungs, improves oxygen efficiency and tones your body without impact. On the mental side, it teaches deep relaxation, focus and how to manage stress. Many of our students say that after learning freediving in Amed they feel calmer in daily life, sleep better and think more clearly.
What depths or skills can I reach after a beginner course?
The course maximum is 20 metres, and 12 metres is the depth required for certification. Along the way you learn the essential techniques and core freediving theory.
First, we cover pressure and equalization: buoyancy, proper weighting and safe equalization techniques. You study ear anatomy, learn effective maneuvers, and apply them during all four water sessions.
Next is breathing. You explore how breathing affects your mind and body, covering gas exchange, relaxation, and techniques like belly and chest breathing and deconcentration. The breathwork and stretching workshop gives you a routine to keep using after the course.
Finally, we focus on safety. You learn how to avoid risks, prevent accidents and handle hypoxic situations like blackouts. We teach safe dive planning, how to combine scuba and freediving, and how to train safely after the course. You also practise full in-water rescue protocols so you can help others if needed.
